Welcome to Estuary View Escapes

Cumbria's best kept secret. Estuary View Escapes is a campervan and motorhome site nestled in the heart of Millom, with panoramic views over the Duddon Estuary and the fells that frame this corner of the Lake District.

This is a quiet site. Few frills, no entertainment programme, no clubhouse. Just a handful of well-spaced pitches with electric hook-up available, the sound of the water, and arguably one of the most spectacular views in the country. The sort of place you come to slow down rather than fill the day.

The site sits on Millom Pier itself, a working part of the town's history. The pier was built in 1866 to ship iron ore from the Hodbarrow Mines and to carry passenger ferries across to the Isle of Man and along the coast. When the iron ore industry wound down the pier closed, and it was carefully restored in the early 1990s as a public recreational space. Today it's a focal point for locals and visitors — fishing, walking, sea views in every direction, and a reminder of the industrial heritage that built this part of Cumbria.

Safety Measures

  • The quay edge is a far drop at low water levels, take care with children and dogs in the area during low tide
  • The tide can be fast-flowing when it is coming in so take caution not to stray too far into the estuary
  • Keep an eye on your children and pets as this is a big site with a beach to the south
  • There is a slipway to the north of the quay for water vehicles.
    Please be aware that the estuary totally dries out at a low water level, so you should check tide heights for the Duddon Estuary to make sure it's mid to high level tide on days of use.
    Watercraft will need approximately 7-9 metres for safe enjoyment of the estuary.

  • You will be given the combination lock of the lock on the gate when entering the site. Please make sure you lock the gate behind you.
  • The Estuary is a fantastic fishing place for Flounder and Bass.
    Fishing tackle and bait can be hired from Gint's tackle shop.
    Please make sure you exercise caution and are aware of your surroundings while fishing.
  • There are onsite fresh water points
  • There are onsite spoil disposal tanks
  • There are onsite rubbish bins
  • There is an onsite portaloo
  • There are electrical hookups on site.
  • There are no onsite showers

Basic but clean facilities. Fantastic views and accessible walks. Superb communication from the owners, especially liked the personal touch of coming to meet everyone who camps there. Hopefully be back when it isn't torrential rain and 60mph winds. Even got a local pizza place to deliver to the gate!

Millom Castle was built in the early 14th century by John de Huddleston, who was a wealthy landowner in the area. The castle was originally a fortified manor house, with a curtain wall surrounding a courtyard that contained living quarters, a great hall, and other buildings.

Millom Rock Park

Millom Rock Park

Millom Rock Park opened in Spring 2010 at Ghyll Scaur Quarry in south-west Cumbria, to provide a unique visitor attraction. It gives a new and exciting perspective on the geology of the Lake District and a fascinating insight into the workings of the quarry and the local mining industry. Many of the rocks on display were extracted from the quarry, others were brought in from other quarries in Cumbria and Lancashire.
